Audition Requirements for the 2025–2026 School Year
The audition requirements for the 2025–2026 school year have been updated and are current. Each Fine Arts program at Westbury High School has its own set of audition guidelines. Please refer to the list below to view the specific requirements for each art area. Please review them carefully and prepare accordingly; we look forward to seeing your talent.
Program Requirements
Choir
Please be aware that acceptance into our Choral Program requires some after-school and weekend practice, as well as performances.
In-Person Only:
- Prepare two selections of contrasting styles (Classical, Pop, Musical, Jazz, etc.).
- Interview with Choir Instructor
- Be prepared to sight read a simple selection using Solfege.

Concert/Jazz/Marching Band
Please be aware that acceptance into our music program requires participation in after-school and weekend practices, as well as performances.
Audition Requirements:
Part 1: In Person or Virtual
- After students arrive and warm up their instruments, the audition process will begin.
- The students will play the chromatic scale and 2 of their 12 major scales, chosen by the judges. (Chromatic scale should be played at least 2 octaves from low E concert to E above the staff. Saxophones G-G, B-Flat inst. Low F#-F#, French Horn B-B, concert pitched instruments E-E)
- Students then play their prepared etude of their choice. *This etude can be their Region or All-City Band Audition piece. (Jazz band may include some improvisation in addition to sight-reading)*
- Students will then sight-read a selected piece from a method book for their instrument.
Students are required to provide their own instrument during the audition. We would recommend that you ask your Middle School or local instrumental rental location to borrow an instrument. Should you need assistance preparing for your audition, please contact one of the following Band Directors: Leonard Campbell or Reginald Washington.

Dance
Please be aware that acceptance into our Dance program requires participation in after-school and weekend practices, as well as performances.
Audition Requirements:
Part 1: Audition
For your audition, please wear a black leotard, pink tights, and ballet or jazz shoes.
The audition process will take place in a group setting, with a focus on both ballet and modern. Students will be evaluated throughout the session on basic dance technique.
Part 2 - Call Back (if needed)

Guitar

Please be aware that acceptance into our music program requires participation in after-school and weekend practices, as well as performances.
Audition Requirements:
- Inexperienced: 1½-2-minute excerpt of a prepared piece. Please ensure you bring a hard copy for the director to follow along. If you have no experience, discuss with the director your goals and/or the instrument you are interested in learning.
- Experienced- Students with experience in violin, guitar, vihu ela, guitarron, harp, or trumpet will be required to play a 1½-2-minute excerpt of a prepared piece/song (doesn’t have to be mariachi). Please ensure you bring a hard copy for the director to follow along. Violin, trumpet, and harp will also have to play two scales of their choice. After playing the song of their choice, students will be required to sight-read a piece chosen by the director. Sight reading will not affect whether the student gets into the program, but it will determine the level at which they are placed. Finally, there will be a short interview.

Please prepare two solos from different periods (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 20th Century, Popular, etc.) and 3 major scales in 2 or more octaves. Additionally, you may also choose to answer the questions below:
- Why are you applying for the Instrumental Music program at Westbury High School?
- What level of experience do you have?
- Interview with Piano Instructor
- Be prepared to sight-read a simple selection.

Theatre
Please be aware that acceptance into our music program requires participation in after-school and weekend practices, as well as performances.
Audition Requirements:
Part 1: In-Person and Virtual Auditions:
All students should prepare and memorize a 60-second monologue from a published play (no self-written monologues).
- Search for monologues within the age range of 15–25 years, and ones that allow for reactions. Please stay away from narrative/story monologues.
- If you would like to audition for the Varsity Theatre group and compete in UIL, please complete & submit the Theatre Production Application
If you are more interested in the Technical side of Theatre than in the Performance side, please submit a portfolio of work you have done in stage or film production, IN ADDITION TO your prepared monologue.
Please note that monologues must be memorized. Being an actor or actress requires a great deal of memorization, so this is your first opportunity to prove your commitment.

Additional Information about the Theatre Program
Visual Art
Please be aware that acceptance into our music program requires participation in after-school and weekend practices, as well as performances.
Audition Requirements:
Part 1:
Please prepare the following:
- A portfolio* of at least 10 completed pieces. Pictures of your work are sufficient. Please ensure that the images in your artwork are clear and taken in good lighting.
- A reflective piece of at least 250 words answering the following:
- Why do you want to be part of the Visual Art Magnet Program at Westbury?
- This should be in a Word Document using the 12pt, Times New Roman font.
*Your portfolio is significant to show the Visual Art faculty your abilities and interest area(s). If the correct number of pieces does not accompany the portfolio, you will need to reschedule your audition.
